By Earle G. Shettleworth Jr.

Celebrating the bicentennial of Maine’s statehood, Maine’s Lithographic Landscapes: Town and City Views, 1830-1870 explores Maine’s antebellum art and architecture, and the role lithography played in promoting the state and its early artistic and economic aspirations. It assembles the remarkable panoramic prints created for burgeoning ports and industrial centers from Bangor to Saco-Biddeford. Rare images, they celebrate the promise and progress of the young state. There is a section on views of Bowdoin College and surrounding areas.

Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., Maine State Historian, has written and lectured extensively on Maine’s history and architecture for more than fifty years. He holds an honorary degree from Bowdoin College.

It’s the perfect book for those who love Maine, both full-time residents and those who make it a beloved destination.

The book is a companion to the exhibition, Maine’s Lithographic Landscapes: Town and City Views, 1830-1870, on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 2019/2020. Published by Brandeis University Press in association with the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
